Al Downing Honors 2026 Ceremony

The Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association celebrated the legacy of jazz educator, musician, and community leader Alvin Joseph Downing during its 2026 Honors Awards program, which also marked what would have been his 110th birthday. Family members, musicians, and supporters gathered to recognize his lasting influence on jazz education and the Tampa Bay community.

During the event, Downing's daughter, Alvin Downing McCleave, praised the organization's work in continuing the vision her parents began more than 53 years ago. “The Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association is making their hopes a reality,” she said while reflecting on the impact of her family's commitment to nurturing young musicians.

The celebration featured performances by scholarship recipients and honored several leaders in the local jazz community. Robert Thomas was named Jazz Educator of the Year, Kenny Walker received Jazz Musician of the Year honors, and Warren Buchholz was recognized as Jazz Supporter of the Year. The event concluded with a tribute to legendary bassist John Lamb and a renewed call to “Keep Jazz Alive.”
